Removing Sweets as Treats |
As part of our aim to encourage children to get active and to get healthy, we now aim to remove sweets as treats within school. In order to reward children, we now give the best line at the end of break a point. When the group gets over 10 points, they receive 10 minutes of extra break and active time. The children love this new system!!
Active Schools Slogan Competition
|
All children thought very long and hard about the perfect slogan for encouraging other children to get active. Our winning slogan came from fourth class 'Give up those fries, Exercise those thighs'.

10@10
10@10 was an initiative run by Operation Transformation. It required children to exercise for 10 minutes on the 10th of February at 10 o' clock. The whole school engaged in this and had great fun. We now engage in this regularly which provides the children with a fun way of exercising. We also use goNoodle where children dance to a song with the aid of a video. It is a way for us to incorporate the Dance strand of P.E. into our classrooms.
If you want to practice 10@10 with all the family at home, just click on the video below:
Active Schools Week
Non-Competitive Running
Each class went to the G.A.A. field and tried to run or walk as many laps as they could. The amount of laps each person ran/walked was calculated and we came to a whopping total of 654kms!! Each class total was calculated and each class received a certificate. The children try to beat their own personal record.
Cork City Sports
After school trials engaged in by all children, our selected athletes headed to C.I.T. where they were pitted against other amazing runners. We are very proud of all athletes and their performances on the day. We brought back loads of silverwear!!
Partnerships with local organisations
Soccer Tournament for girls and boys organised by Buttevant A.F.C.
Hurling and Football in conjunction with local G.A.A. club
Coaching from Transition Years from Coláiste Mhuire
Coaches from Mallow Rugby Club and Munster Academy teaching children some rugby skills
Supertroopers
Super Troopers with Laya Healthcare is the first ever health homework programme in Ireland. It encourages children and their families to become more active and learn about healthy lifestyles. The programme includes short burst, fun activities around physical activity, wellbeing and nutrition. Children engage in this year round and teachers can incorporate these activities into class too.
Dancing
Every Monday, all classes engage in Irish Dancing classes with Breda. Traditional sets, reels and steps are taught to children and this is a great way of getting exercise in a fun way. Well done to our amazing dancers who brought home loads of trophies and medals from Feis.
